My Undying Love for the Infrared Sauna

When I first walked into the infrared sauna room at Energy Zone Wellness Center, I honestly did not know what to expect. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always loved sitting in the sauna and steam room at the gym. But this felt different. The room is set up with two infrared sauna pods (that somewhat reminded me of a tanning bed) and a partition to divide for privacy purposes. It was relaxing. The lights were dim, the background music was soothing. Suzanne, one of the managers, was doing a great job of explaining why these infrared saunas are more beneficial than the typical sauna – detox for the body, relaxation, calorie burning, pain relief, anti-aging and skin purification, cell health, and improved circulation, just to name a few.

The infrared sauna heaters give off a heat that doesn’t actually heat up the room, but rather is absorbed by the body – just like sitting in the sunshine really, but without the skin cancer. Also, infrared kills bacteria. So win win!

She moved the the top of the apparatus to show me how easy it is to get in and out, that definitely relieved some of my claustrophobic-ness.  She provided me with two cups of alkaline water, which is always available for clients in the center of the facility.

She set the 20 minute timer, gave me another cup of alkaline water just in case I needed it, closed the partition, and went on her way to assist the other clients. And there I was, all alone, not even with my cell phone. I slid the top of the pod down, got in like I was going to bed, and then slid the top of the pod back up to my shoulders.

(Side note – that’s not me, that’s one of our clients who won a free massage and infrared sauna session from a promotion a few months ago, but you get the idea).

For the first few minutes, I didn’t know what to do with myself. Just lying there seemed to be my only option, but of course I wanted to check my work emails, hop on Instagram, send a few texts, the usual. I’m used to constantly doing “something”, like most of us nowadays. But that feeling of what-do-I-do-now quickly subsided, and suddenly I felt relaxed; but not the “relaxation” we think we feel at the end of the day watching TV, lying on the couch, with a bag of chips in our hand.

Twenty minutes then flew by. I think I even dozed off for 10 minutes (which is something I do regularly now). The timer went off and I was a sweaty, glistening, glowing goddess . I felt 2 pounds lighter and that’s not even an exaggeration. I got out of the pod, drank more alkaline water as instructed, put my robe back on, and couldn’t wait to share this experience with whoever would listen. I was hooked. My coworkers actually did listen, since I told them this is covered by our insurance through the acupuncture package with Mr. Park, the licensed acupuncturist in the facility 🙂

The next week I made sure to make the infrared sauna a part of my weekly health and self-care routine. My schedule is pretty hectic, but I knew I needed to make time for myself more, and this was going to be it. After a month of using the sauna twice a week for  20 minute sessions, I even lost 4 pounds, my skin cleared up a bit, and my usual over-worked muscle soreness subsided.

Everyone who I have spoken to that uses the saunas at Energy Zone Wellness Center feels the same way as I do. Some people use it to escape their everyday responsibilities for 20 minutes of “me” time, some use it for weight loss, some use it as a pain reliever. Either way, we all use it and love it!

Don’t believe me? Try it yourself!!

My advice:

If heat is a problem, then a shorter intro session is for you – anywhere from 5-10 min at a lower level heat until you feel comfortable sitting around relaxing in this slice of heaven for anywhere from 20-25 minutes.

You should definitely go in naked. Don’t worry, they change the towels and mats for everyone. Trust me, you will be a sweat ball and it will be glorious.

My Story @ Energy Zone Wellness Center

Before I entered Energy Zone Wellness Center back in December 2016, I considered myself a very healthy and energetic 30 year old woman. I work out at least 4 or 5 times a week, I “meal prep Monday”, I drink lemon water every morning, I take probiotics – basically you name it, I do it (or have done it).

However, my downfall is I carry too much stress and have horrible time management skills (because I say yes to everything). As a teacher, I am constantly taking on too many extra tasks and I don’t have an off switch.  As a health nut, I still try to maintain my strict schedule of workouts, food shopping, and cooking. My colleagues know it, my friends know, hell my own grandmother knows it.

Needless to say, I was burning out and almost falling asleep at the wheel by the end of the work week. I needed a change. I couldn’t continue living this way. A teacher friend of mine asked if I wanted to go for acupuncture over our Christmas break last year. She told me that our insurance covered acupuncture with Mr. Park (Liberty Acupuncture to be exact, he has a room within the facility), and that we would also be receiving a full body massage and a 20-minute infrared sauna session through “the spa”. Obviously without question, I said yes (shocker).

I entered Energy Zone Wellness Center rundown, exhausted, carrying my planner in my bag with a list of things that I still needed to do that day, but super excited for a little bit of self-care. Because let’s be honest my workouts and healthy living sometimes just feel like another chore I give myself.

During my acupuncture assessment, I informed him about the pinched nerve I have on the right side of my neck, how I lift heavy weights, and sit at a desk working on my computer often. He also checked my tongue (which I thought was weird) which I later learn in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the tongue will show the depth and nature (hot, cold, etc.) of an imbalance. Next you know it I’m on the bed, with needles on my hands, feet, neck, and ear. He turned the hot lamp on and I fell asleep right away. I felt some tension released from my neck, but I knew one time wouldn’t cure me.

Next was the massage with Tersa. I have always been someone who gets massages, my body is always sore (from lack of stretching) and I love to pamper myself. Tersa was amazing, hands down. I recommended her to at least 3 people that week. She knew exactly where I was hurting and she focused on those areas with a deep massage (after asking my permission). Now that I know her, I have seen her customize all of her massages based upon her client’s needs.

The infrared sauna was last. This was very different from a regular sauna. I had never experienced this before and was apprehensive at first because it looked like an igloo and a tanning bed had a baby. I don’t like to feel confined to places so I was nervous about getting in. However once I immersed myself into the “pod” I felt relaxed and never wanted to get out (yes, I said that, direct quote). By the time 20 minutes was up, my body was glistening with sweat and I felt 4 pounds lighter. I was hooked.

Before I left that day I spoke with the managers, Lana and Suzanne. They were lovely, different from each other, but it was like watching sisters. We talked about our own health and wellness journeys, tips and tricks, and setbacks we’ve had along the way. I booked another appointment and left feeling a little less tense and a lot less stressed. I couldn’t exactly figure it out right away. But after a few more sessions, it all made sense.

Well, here I am a year later. I’ve been welcomed into the Energy Zone Wellness Center family with open arms. I have used a number of their services and I will be writing about them here. I hope you enjoy!

Does i-Lipo Really Work?

One of the very popular services at Energy Zone Wellness Center is the i-Lipo machine. This machine is an FDA-approved system that uses low-level lasers to shrink fat in a non-invasive way. These lasers work through pads that are placed directly on the skin for 20 minutes. Afterwards, a massage-like device is used on the treatment area for 10-15 minutes to further break down fat. Clients do not feel anything during the procedure other than a slight warming sensation.

Clinical studies show that i-lipo has comparable results that are achieved through liposuction surgery.  There is a 30% reduction in the fat layer depth just after one treatment, and more can be achieved through more sessions.  As the fat cell contents are released and excreted through the lymphatic system, immediate results can be seen after the treatment. It is recommended to do light exercise post treatment to accelerate the removal process of the released fat.

Our certified staff thoroughly explains the process before starting. All clients will be asked what their major concerns/trouble areas. One of our clients main focus  was the small pouch on her lower abdomen.  After her treatments she would perform a few light exercises on the vibramachine (infographic below)  which vibrates her entire body to trigger the lymphatic system to help illuminate the waist of the treatment. After 8 sessions she was very pleased with the results and continues to come to Energy Zone for manual lymphatic drainage massages with our licenses massage therapists.

Endymed 3DEEP Technology

The EndyMed Machine

Given FDA clearance in March 2011, EndyMed’s 3DEEP applicators use radio-frequency technology to firm, tighten and lift sagging skin on the face and body by heating the collagen in the dermis. The energy from the heat delivered to the collagen causes it to shrink, which immediately alters the appearance of skin, while also triggering the production of new collagen. This collagen remodeling helps to make the skin look younger and firmer, tightening loose or lax skin and improving tone and texture.

Radio-frequency technology differs to more traditional skin resurfacing technologies, such as lasers, in that the results are not affected by skin color, (it is suitable for all types) and that it penetrates deep within the dermis to heat the tissues and produce increases in tissue volume.

EndyMed produces a number of products and applicators which fit on to the device and are specifically designed to reduce the appearance of ageing, improve skin elasticity, reduce cellulite, as well as other lumps and bumps and improve contours of the face and body, including:

• EndyMed 3DEEP Facial Tightening applicator provides deep dermal heating for use on the face and neck areas, including jowls to smooth wrinkles, tighten, lift and firm the skin.
• EndyMed 3DEEP Body Tightening applicator provides deep dermal heating for use on smaller parts of the body, such as the decolletage, arms and knees to tighten and lift the skin.
• EndyMed 3DEEP Body Contouring applicator providers deep dermal heating for use on larger parts of the body to reduce cellulite and to improve contouring, including on the thighs, flanks, bottom and tummy.
• EndyMed 3DEEP Fractional Skin Resurfacing applicator combines micro-fractional radio frequency skin resurfacing with the deep dermal heating to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, scarring and sun damage on the face, decolletage and backs of hands.

Acupressure Massage and it’s Benefits

Acupressure is a specific type of massage that relies primarily on using the thumbs, fingers and palms to apply pressure to various points on the body. Therapists may use various rhythms, pressures and techniques in the practice. Shiatsu massage is a style of acupressure therapy.

Defined as an ancient healing art that uses the fingers to gradually press key healing points, Acupressure relieves energy blockages. The energy flow in your body affects everything — how you feel, how you think, and how you breathe.

While negative thoughts can block your energy flow, positive thoughts can increase your healing energy. These energy blockages occur at the acupressure points.

Acupressure Therapy is renowned for its ideal for self-treatment and preventive health care by boosting the immune system.

Lympha System

September 2017

We here at Energy Zone Wellness Center are passionately committed to all of our client’s wants and needs. We want to make sure that everyone is aware of all of the amazing and sometimes unique services we have to offer. But first we want to start by educating everyone on how important it is to maintain a healthy lymphatic system. Although we may not feel or see it, it’s one of the most important (and often forgotten) systems of the human body. As you can see from the picture below, this network runs throughout our whole body. There are hundreds of lymph nodes in the human body that are affected by toxins and chemicals in our everyday life.

Simply put, the lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials. The primary function of the lymphatic system is to transport lymph, a fluid containing infection-fighting white blood cells, throughout the body. This is why we need to keep our lymphatic system running smoothly.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF A CONGESTED LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

Soreness and/or stiffness in the morning

Feeling tired

Bloating / Holding on to water

Itchy skin/Dry skin/Mild rash/Acne

Weight gain and extra belly fat

Swollen glands

Low immunity

Brain fog

Breast swelling or soreness with each cycle

Hypersensitivity

Mild headaches

Occasional constipation, diarrhea, and/or mucus in the stool

An increasing number of diseases and disorders can be caused by a weakened lymphatic system. Therefore, we offer a number of services to help detox and drain one’s lymphs. All of our massage therapists are trained to perform lymphatic drainage massages. This unique and specific massage applies gentle pressure techniques used to move the waste fluids from the damaged areas.

We also have Pressotherapy body massages, known as “lympha pants and jacket” (see our picture below). These devices enhance our lymphatic flow, as well as increase blood circulation, fight cellulite, and eliminate toxins.

The infrared sauna is just another device we offer. This sauna therapy penetrates deeper into the skin, and allows the body to sweat out toxins from the inside out (opposite of a regular sauna).  The circulation/release of toxins, the regeneration of tissues, and the heat all work together to improve lymphatic flow.

There are many ways you can drain your own lympha fluids too: regular exercise, yoga, walking, dry brushing, herbs, and eating raw foods can greatly increase your own flow.

Energy Zone Wellness Center is fully prepared to work with you on draining your lympha system and living your healthiest life.
